William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology and Media Studies, University of Virginia
Andrea Press, currently William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology and Media Studies at the University of Virginia, was the founding Chair of the Department of Media Studies and served as the Executive Director of the Virginia Film Festival for three years. She came to the University of Virginia in 2006 to shepherd the Media Studies Program to departmental status and to begin its graduate program. Professor Press is internationally known for her interdisciplinary scholarship on the media audiences, feminist media issues, and on media and social class in the U.S. and is the author of Women Watching Television, and co-author of Speaking Of Abortion, The New Media Environment, Media and Class, and the forthcoming books Handbook of Contemporary Feminism and Media-Ready Feminism and Everyday Sexism. She co-edits The Communication Review, and has edited book series in feminist media studies for the University of Pennsylvania Press and University of Illinois Press.
